Hello, bookish friends! It’s been a while… funny how time gets away from you these days, isn’t it?

As I was thinking about my latest read, I thought I’d try a new twist on a typical Book Notes review. This novel just had so many things to like, it seemed a list was in order. So, I bring you…

5 Reasons to Read Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid!

Malibu Rising: A Novel by [Taylor Jenkins Reid]

1. You love a good family saga!

Malibu Rising is the story of the Riva family… the good, the bad, and the very ugly. It spans several decades, jumping between two main timelines, and introduces us to a playboy father, a long-suffering mother, and the four children whose lives are shaped throughout the storyline. Families can be complicated, and this one is a rather illustrative example!

2. Beach reads are your thing!

This was one of *the* books of last summer… how I’ve just now gotten around to reading it, I’m not sure. But this story, set in Malibu with the ocean playing a strong supporting character, literally feels like summer. It has sand, sweeping Pacific views, and surfing. I think the only thing that would have upgraded this book for me was to have been sitting on a lounge chair overlooking the ocean while reading!

3. You’re into nostalgia!

Malibu Rising spans from the late 1950’s through the early 1980’s. It captures the early days of a California beach town contrasted with the decadence of the 80’s. There were no smartphones or internet, but I’m not sure I’d call it a simpler time based on this story!

4. Juicy scandal more your thing? It’s in here.

This one has it all. Rise to stardom and the pressures and public failures that come with it? Check. A naive girl getting swept along in a modeling career she’s lost control over? Check. The “sex, drugs, and rock & roll” excess of of a larger-than-life era? Absolutely check.

(Now, that comes with a side note… there are instances of sexual harassment, potential suicide, alcoholism and addiction, abandonment, and infidelity, among others. If any of those are sensitive subjects for you, be aware.)

5. Hello, the Author??

I mean… it’s Taylor Jenkins Reid! Storyweaver of blockbusters such as Daisy Jones & the Six and The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. If you’re a fan, you’ll definitely want to pick up this one. If you’re not yet a fan, start with any of these novels!

What do you think? Was this one you read and enjoyed? Let me know in the comments. Happy reading!
