Friday Favorites

Friday Favorites – 11/2/18

Hello, friends! Well, Halloween has passed, the leaves have fallen in many areas, and we are into November.  Hard to believe how fast 2018 has gone!

Today I’m launching a new series called Friday Favorites.  I want to round up some things each week that I’ve loved, whether it’s a book I recently read, an article or link that I enjoyed, or something fun to look forward to!  It will be largely about bookish things, but I’ll throw in plenty of other fun stuff as well.

So… on to the initial installment of Friday Favorites!

PBS Great American Read Winner

Last week, PBS wrapped up it’s series on The Great American Read with the announcement of a grand winner:  To Kill a Mockingbird.  (Link to article)

This is a well-loved classic that most of us in the U.S. read during our high school years.  It sounds like it is worth another read-through as an adult.  The most impressive thing to me with this winner was that it came out on top in 48 of the 50 states!  That’s about as close to unanimous as we get.

If you haven’t read this beloved title, or if you want to revisit it, you can grab a copy through these links:

Heard of this huge event?  NaNoWriMo (which stands for National Novel Writing Month) kicked off yesterday for 2018.  It’s an international event where writers sit down and plug away at those manuscripts, with a goal of writing an entire 50,000 word draft of a book in one month.  Yes, really!  (Some people set alternate goals but that’s the “official” purpose.)

Writers interact with each other online and provide support, earn badges, and wear out their keyboards!  I’m not participating this year, but I plan to in the future.  It’s great fun, though, to follow along and see the progress of other participants, and it may inspire you to want to join in!  Just search #nanowrimo on social media (primarily Twitter) and you will find all kinds of stories and updates about this project.

Hallmark Christmas

Hallmark is well known for greeting cards, feel good movies… and Christmas!  I love when the new holiday movies start coming out on the Hallmark channels!  But did you know that there are OTHER pieces to a quintessential Hallmark holiday?

Hallmark also has a publishing division that does the same kind of great feel good stories in book form!  They have several new holiday-themed books out now!  Later this month, I plan to do a post on a couple of great titles from this lineup!  If you’re curious about them, you can visit

In the meantime… Hallmark has just given us yet another great Christmas product… if you have SiriusXM radio at home or in your vehicle, you can now listen to the Hallmark Christmas Music station!

Guess what’s going on in my car this afternoon?!?  Seriously, there are a lot of great stations out there… and you may not be *quite* ready for holiday tunes… but definitely save this one because it’s bound to be great!

So there you have it… just a few of my favorite things from the week.  Now, what do you think?  Do you like this post idea?  Want to keep seeing some of the things I love?  Be sure to subscribe to my blog, and if you have other great topic ideas for Friday Favorites, let me know in the comments!  Happy reading!

  1. Oooooh my goodness! First of all, I love the idea of having a Friday Favorites post. I can’t wait to keep up with them. And second……I had NO idea that Hallmark had a SiriusXM channel!!!! We have Sirius in our van and now I know what I’ll be listening to through Christmas! Thank you for sharing that!!!

  2. Our library used to host NaNoWriMo events for writers to come and work on their word counts. Unfortunately, it wasn’t too popular since my former system had no idea how to appeal to writers or the public. Putting a sign on a table didn’t exactly inspire anyone…. lol. I always thought: how about some coffee, at least…maybe chocolate chip cookies, comfy couches…ya know. I would love partake in NaNo one year. Goals!

    1. Coffee and cookies would help get me there, LOL! Yeah, I’m planning to do it one of these years… I had to honestly look at my time over the next month and knew it wasn’t going to work this year!
